Questionnaire
The first step is to send the questionnaire to the client : Website Questionnaire
Gather Info
Once you have received the completed questionnaire from the client you can start answering these questions. Feel free to use this Scoping Document to organize all the specifics. Some may specify that dev be brought in for scoping. If that is the case you’ll need to get hosting, domain, and CMS access for client’s current site if there is one. Login Request Doc.
You may need to go back to the client to further discuss specifics and questions that may arise from their questionnaire in order to gather all necessary details.
How many pages?
- Smaller/standard sites often have 8 or so pages:
- Home, About, Services, Service A, B, C, Contact.
- Mid sized/larger sites often have 10 to 20 pages
- Above, plus bio pages, additional content pages, history, etc.
How many custom post types?
- Post types are custom/specific content that we’ll need a custom page type and design for. They are typically things like testimonials, bios, and events.
- For each post type:
- What will be included?
- Example: Event
- Name
- Location
- Date
- Image
- Link
How many templates?
- Homepage is always 1 template. Then there is always a default content page template. Add one template for each custom post type. Add a template for any other unique pages needed that couldn’t use a default content page.
Are there any post to post relationships? If yes, please lay them out.
- Examples:
- authors that relate to articles (the author would appear on the article page and the article would appear listed on the author page).
- Bios and locations (people work at certain locations, so they are linked on the location page, and the location is linked on their bio page)
What integrations are needed?
- Examples: Mailchimp, Zoho, Gravity Forms (almost always), Zapier, Social media feeds, etc.
Are there any API’s to integrate?
- If yes, dev needs to scope before proposal is made.
eCommerce (WooCommerce)
Note: Dev needs to scope all eCommerce projects before proposal is made.
- What payment gateway(s)?
- What shipping integrations?
- What filter, sorting, browsing options?
Content
Present this, clients often cut it out of proposal and opt to write themselves. (still need to determine how to price/include implementing content)
- Estimated price based on # of long form and # of short form
- Long-form content – $250/page
- 500 – 1,000 words with multiple subjects
- Short-form content – $100/page
- 100 – 250 words with one subject
Data migration
- Dev must scope if data migration is needed
- Examples: products, inventory, content from current site.
Assets
- Pitch photography and video most of the time – Max putting together details for how to estimate/pitch assets.
Next Steps
If all questions are answered move on to proposal. If still need more info, continue gathering details through discussions with client.
After contract is signed: move on to on-boarding process:
